    I've had this vacuum for some time and haven't thrown it away. Through the years we've had numerous Black & Decker hand vacs and all of them have stopped working around the 1-year mark. I had such hope for this one but it stopped working after only 6 months of use. It also never held a charge, and would stop working before I'd used it for between 10 and 15 minutes. It just wasn't a good hand vac. I think people should go with off brand because all of the off brands we've used have performed really well. With Black & Decker hand vacs the performance isn't very good, they're expensive, and they poop out after an unsatisfactory length of time. You'll also find that every single charger is different, which is annoying at best.

    The best hand vac I've ever had is the Kranich 120W Handheld Vacuum Cleaner with Stainless Steel Filter Lightweight Hand Held Vac. It's still going strong after several years of use. It holds a charge through several vac cycles, and it can be used in your car or home.

    I previously owned a good old-fashioned dust buster that lasted nearly 15 years before it needed to be replaced. I purchased the black and decker a little over two years ago, and after about a year it would only hold a charge for about 5-10 minutes (after being charged for days). The last 6 months it will only hold a charge for about 2 minutes. Sometimes that is all I need, but only about 50% of the time. Finally breaking down and buying something else. Giving it 3 stars as it worked great the first year, however it's ridiculous that you should have to replace a product like this every year.

    Better design than earlier model (ni-cad battery). I like that I can leave it off charge for some time and it will give still work well. Reasonably light weight, ergonomicle grip. Gripes: extender requires some effort to release, filter clogs easily. Otherwise, it gets the small jobs done.

    I purchased this and was initially satisfied (not great but worked for basic messes until I could pull out the real vacuum). However, as I see other people have noted, the battery completely died as soon as the warranty lapsed. The battery is "replaceable"... it took thirty minutes to take out 7 crews and pry the cover apart. It's designed in such a fashion that it looks like they want you to chuck the whole thing and buy a new machine.

    I want to amend my previous review: you can pull the battery out, but the replacement isn't for sale. The closest thing is a different product number, doesn't look like it fits, and IS MORE EXPENSIVE than buying a new Dustbuster.

    Wait: There's more! I have to buy the same or similar model again, because like an idiot, I screwed the mounting bracket into the wall. So, unless I want holes all over my wall from failed Dustbuster mounting bracket installations, I'm stuck with this piece of crap forever.
